The agreement on the transit of Russian gas to the European Union without any conditions has finally been signed by the Ukraine. The cut in Russian gas supplies had left hundreds of thousands of people in Central and Eastern Europe without heating, struggling to keep warm during one of the harshest winters in years.
Russia said previously it could not implement an agreement with Ukraine to resume gas flows to Europe, because Ukraine had added an unacceptable clause to the original agreement, denying it owed Russia for past supplies of gas. Now, after numerous negotiations, the Ukrainians signed the agreement without any clauses, fulfilling Russia’s conditions and overcoming obstacles to the restoration of gas supplies.
EU monitors have been deployed to check when the pipeline flow resumes.
I’m very glad to hear this news.
