Jon Candelaria is being hailed as a hero for pulling a man out of rushing floodwaters during Superstorm Sandy. He did what most hope to have the courage to do in a life or death emergency.

The 25-year-old father was in his family’s Upper East Side apartment on Monday night when he looked out the window and saw an SUV taxi lifted by the powerful force of water beneath it.

Candelaria, who is a waiter in New York City, went to save the driver who was nearly drowning. The water was up to Candelaria’s chest, but he managed to pry open the door, with the driver’s help, just in time.

A woman whose $23-million lottery ticket was gathering dust inside a glove compartment finally realized she might have been a winner and claimed it five months later — just before the deadline came.

Friday night a star-studded NBC telethon raised an unknown amount of money for storm relief efforts with its broadcast featuring hometown heroes Springsteen, Jon Stewart, Billy Joel and Bon Jovi.

The funds will be added to a total of $35 million already donated by early Friday morning according to the American Red Cross. “The public has been generous,” a spokesperson said.

The Walt Disney Company announced Thursday it will donate $2 million to relief efforts, splitting it into two parts — $1 million for immediate relief and $1 million for rebuilding. Its foundation will also match, dollar for dollar, all donations made by employees.

A mother in North Texas has been awarded a Guinness World Record for donating breast milk.

Alicia Richman, 28, from Granbury, pumped over 86 gallons between June 2011 and March 2012 for donation to The Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas, a nonprofit that supplies neonatal intensive care units.

The thumbnail-sized golden colored Kihansi Spray Toad, only discovered by scientists in 1996, was officially declared Extinct in the Wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2009.

But thanks to a captive breeding program begun in 2000, the amphibian has been reestablished in its only known habitat, beneath a waterfall’s continuous spray in south-central Tanzania. From a collection of 499 toads saved in the wild by the University of Dar Salaam, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Bronx Zoo and Toledo Zoo have multiplied the captive population to more than 6,000. This week, more than two thousand of the tiny toads were reintroduced to their wet native habitat, at the base of the Kihansi Gorge.

Spencer Service has seen cats in the alley below his Ocean Avenue apartment before. But Monday afternoon was the first time he’d seen one surrounded by newborn kittens—on the precipice of the biggest storm to slam New York City in recent history.

As Sandy was rolling in, Spencer tried sheltering the fledgling feline family under a cardboard box. But he knew it wouldn’t be enough.

So he grabbed a cat carrier and trudged 2 miles to the local animal rescue facility.
