Peru Passes 10-Year Ban on Genetically Engineered Foods

Potatoes Peruvian varieties

Potatoes Peruvian varietiesDespite pressure from multinational agri-business corporations such as Monsanto, the Peruvian Environment Minister announced this week that the government has approved a new regulation imposing a moratorium on the production and entry of genetically-modified organisms, also known as transgenics or GMOs, into the country for the next ten years.

The government sided with 6000 or more farmers, some growing the famous and colorful Peruvian potato varieties, who pushed for the ban.

The official, Manuel Pulgar Vidal, called the measure a “demonstration of the government’s commitment to preserve the biodiversity of native crops”.

Occupy Wall Street Folks Are Buying and Abolishing Millions of Dollars of Debt for the 99 Percent

Rolling Jubilee logo

Rolling Jubilee logoThe Occupy Wall Street movement, forever angry about government bail-outs for big banks, finally figured out a way to issue their own bail-outs — this time, for the little guy.

A group called Strike Debt launched a campaign last night, called Rolling Jubilee, that has already raised more than a quarter million dollars to buy up the debt owed by faceless Americans and cancel it, while paying just pennies on the dollar for the privilege.

They call it “a bailout by the people, for the people.”

For example, the $291,180 donated by citizens since last night will purchase debts worth $5.8 million dollars. The group is highlighting a shadowy practice on Wall Street whereby consumer debt, piled up following catastrophic illness, or foreclosure, or other unfortunate circumstance, is purchased from banks with the express purpose of making a profit once debt collectors chase down the funds.

Instead of trying to collect the debt once it’s purchased, the Rolling Jubilee Fund, a non profit organization, will simply forgive it. RIP.

”The Rolling Jubilee intervenes by buying debt, keeping it out of the hands of collectors, and then abolishing it,” says the group’s website. “We’re going into this market not to make a profit but to help each other out and highlight how the predatory debt system affects our families and communities. Think of it as a bailout of the 99% by the 99%.”

It is impossible in this speculative market for the Rolling Jubilee — or anyone — to buy the debt for a specific individual or business because each is anonymous and bundled together. The benefit is for the community overall.

The mailing address for the Rolling Jubilee Fund is: c/o Occupy Wall Street Radio WBAI, 10th floor 120 Wall St New York, NY 10005

spiderEven the most pain-tolerant people cringe once in a while, ripping an adhesive bandage off sensitive skin.

But for babies, the removal process can break open their skin, sometimes causing permanent scarring because the medical tape was designed for adults.

Researchers from MIT and Women’s Hospital believe they have addressed the problem with a new kind of medical tape modeled on the design of spiderwebs.

Santa Macys Parade - by tweber1This year, front row seats to see the marching bands and massive balloons of the iconic Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Day parade will be occupied not by diplomats or corporate titans and their families, but by thousands of New Yorkers hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday that approximately 5,000 seats in bleachers along the parade route will go to families who have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Macy’s will even be providing transportation to and from the event.

Distribution of the tickets will be coordinated local elected officials who represent the neighborhoods hardest hit by Sandy, communities like the Rockaways, Breezy Point, Staten Island, and the Jersey shore.

“Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy friends and family and reflect on life’s blessings, but this will be a particularly difficult holiday for many New Yorkers who suffered terrible losses as a result of Hurricane Sandy,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

“So many people have been donating their time, energy, and resources to helping families hit hard by the storm recover, and we hope that taking part in a tradition like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will make their holiday just a little brighter.”

“For 86 years, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has served as a beacon of hope, renewal and entertainment for New Yorkers and the nation,” said Amy Kule, Macy’s Parade executive producer. “I is our ultimate hope that we can provide some comfort to those most affected by Hurricane Sandy and that they leave the parade knowing that our 8,000 marchers, the City and the nation are behind them as they recover from this devastating storm.”

“Imagine energy efficient towers whose walls might slide open, allowing office workers to step outside, into the sky, for a breath of fresh air. Towers where seasonal gardens grow vertically and where friends might meet by a kumquat tree on the 68th floor for a cup of coffee on a beautiful spring day.”

Scientists Demonstrate First ‘Perfect’ Invisibility Cloaking

cloaking device - Nature Materials experiment

cloaking device - Nature Materials experimentMany “invisibility cloak” efforts have been demonstrated, but all have reflected some of the incident light, making the illusion incomplete.

Now, scientists have succeeded in “cloaking” an object perfectly for the first time, rendering a 7-centimeter cylinder invisible to microwaves.

Microwaves are important in many applications, principally telecommunications and radar, and improved versions of cloaking could vastly improve microwave performance.

Vets Volunteer with Team Rubicon Photo by Thomas Hudson300 veterans, some trained in crisis management, have been donating their time and leading the cleanup effort in the hard hit Rockaway neighborhood in Queens, NY, making life easier for storm weary residents.

Their organization, Team Rubicon, helps others but also helps ex-soldiers from around the country who need a new mission in life, something to become passionate about. They’ve joined together to tackle the seemingly endless task of removing debris and rehabilitating the homes for an entire neighborhood.

They have prioritized the households who need help. Often, teams go in and completely demolish parts of the home, depositing the rubble on the street for disposal, even working on Veterans Day, the holiday meant to honor their service.

Volunteers have completed work at 150 home in the beach community, so far.

You can donate to support their mission on their website.

Meditation Produces Enduring Changes in Brain’s Emotional Processing

A new study has found that participating in an 8-week meditation training program can have measurable effects on how the brain functions even when someone is not actively meditating. In their report in the November issue of Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston University also found differences in those effects based on the specific type of meditation practiced.

“This is the first time that meditation training has been shown to affect emotional processing in the brain outside of a meditative state,” says Gaëlle Desbordes, PhD, corresponding author of the report. Additionally, the two different types of meditation training yielded some differences in the response of the amygdala – a part of the brain known for decades to be important for emotion. One type appeared to reduce states of depression.

Several previous studies have supported the hypothesis that meditation training improves practitioners’ emotional regulation. While neuro-imaging studies have found that meditation training appeared to decrease activation of the amygdala, those changes were only observed while study participants were meditating. The current study was designed to test the hypothesis that meditation training could also produce a generalized reduction in amygdala.

Healthy adults with no experience meditating participated in 8-week courses in either mindful attention meditation – the most commonly studied form that focuses on developing attention and awareness of breathing, thoughts and emotions – and compassion meditation, a less-studied form that includes methods designed to develop loving kindness and compassion for oneself and for others. A control group participated in an 8-week course in health education.

Within three weeks before beginning and three weeks after completing the training, 12 participants from each group traveled to Boston for magnetic resonance brain imaging (fMRI).  Brain scans were performed as the volunteers viewed a series of 216 different images – 108 per session – of people in situations with either positive, negative or neutral emotional content. Meditation was not mentioned in pre-imaging instructions to participants, and investigators confirmed afterwards that the volunteers had not meditated while in the scanner.

In the mindful attention group, the after-training brain scans showed a decrease in activation in the right amygdala in response to all images, supporting the hypothesis that meditation can improve emotional stability and response to stress. In the compassion meditation group, right amygdala activity also decreased in response to positive or neutral images.  But among those who reported practicing compassion meditation most frequently outside of the training sessions, right amygdala activity tended to increase in response to negative images – all of which depicted some form of human suffering. No significant changes were seen in the control group or in the left amygdala of any study participants.

“We think these two forms of meditation cultivate different aspects of mind,” explains Desbordes ,a research fellow at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at MGH and at the BU Center for Computational Neuroscience and Neural Technology. “Since compassion meditation is designed to enhance compassionate feelings, it makes sense that it could increase amygdala response to seeing people suffer. Increased amygdala activation was also correlated with decreased depression scores in the compassion meditation group, which suggests that having more compassion towards others may also be beneficial for oneself. Overall, these results are consistent with the overarching hypothesis that meditation may result in enduring, beneficial changes in brain function, especially in the area of emotional processing.”

Occupy Sandy: Onetime Protesters Excel in a New Cause (VIDEO Added)

Hurricane relief Occupy Sandy-SoclaPants Photo

Hurricane relief Occupy Sandy-SoclaPants PhotoOccupy Wall Street has become a lauded and effective relief organization for victims of Sandy.

The social media savvy that helped Occupy protesters create a grass-roots global movement last year is proving a strength as members fan out across New York to deliver aid including hot meals, medicine and blankets.

There is a sense of camaraderie reminiscent of Zuccotti Park, as young people with scruffy beards and walkie-talkies sort the donations coming in by the truckload to their Brooklyn clearinghouse stocked with every household product imaginable, from canned soup and dog food to duvet covers.

You can volunteer with Occupy Sandy’s efforts by filling out a form here. If you want to donate goods and supplies to the movement, check Occupy Sandy’s news feed and Wedding Registry to determine what they need.
