80% of Americans suffer from deficiencies of vitamin D, a vital element to good health—and this app is hoping to help by shining some light on how exactly they can get it.
While you may think going out into the sunshine is enough to get your daily dose of the essential nutrient, there is actually a lot more to it than that. Vitamin D intake varies depending on your hemisphere, the time of day, how much clothing you’re wearing, the color of your skin, the season, and your age and weight.
Even though these variables may seem overwhelming to calculate, Dminder is a new app that does it for you.
Developed by vitamin D expert Dr. Michael Holick, the app uses your information to determine when you should go out into the sun. The platform then calculates your sunbathing so that you can fulfill your intake without getting a sunburn.

“Wherever you go in the world, dminder tracks the sun and tells you when you can get Vitamin D,” says Holick. “The stopwatch interface lets you set your session target by either amount of D to get or time. Then it will count up or down to your target, applying all the factors that determine how much D you can get: skin tone, age, weight, amount of skin exposed.”
Plus, it counts any additional supplements you use to continuously estimate your current level.
So if you’re like us and you spend your work days in front of a computer screen, this service could be invaluable to your mental and physical health.
