Irish Beach Washed Away 33 Years Ago Has Just Returned Overnight

The tourism in this tiny Irish town has suffered since their beautiful swath of beach was washed away 33 years ago.

But just as suddenly as it disappeared, it has returned.

Storms hit the sands of Dooagh on Achill Island in Ireland back in 1984, leaving nothing but harsh rock and puddles in the place of the beach.

Since the island’s towns largely depended on the beach as a tourism draw, the local economy took a serious blow.

Then, around Easter time in April, a strange cold snap descended on the island, bringing a strong steady wind and a ‘freak tide’ from the north.

Hundreds of thousands of tons of sand washed up on the shore once more, recreating the 300-meter stretch of beach that the locals missed so dearly.

Though the beach’s strange return has already drawn visitors from around the country, island locals are hoping that the beach will receive a blue-flag inspection next year, a special Irish eco-certification.
