An American hitchhiker was given the ride of a lifetime after he took a chance and stuck out his thumb in Australian traffic earlier this week.
Scott Hildebrand, a musician who had just landed in Brisbane from Mexico, had been standing on the side of the road for 15 minutes looking for a ride to Byron when a black van pulled over. The van’s jolly passengers said they would be more than happy to give Hildebrand a ride.
“Chip in for the gas, all right? It’s four grand,” joked one of the passengers.
Little did Hildebrand know was that that passenger happened to be a major movie star who was preparing to bring him along on a helicopter ride.

“All of a sudden we pull up to the helipad. They’re like, ‘Ever flown in a helicopter Scotty?’ and I couldn’t believe it, and that’s when I was like, ‘Who are you guys?’” Hildebrand told an Australian radio show.
As it turns out, the man was Chris Hemsworth: the actor who has starred as Thor in the Marvel movie series. The film star had just finished up filming the Men in Black II remake when he had returned home to Australia and seen Hildebrand on the side of the road.

True to his word, Hemsworth ushered Hildebrand into the helicopter for a speedy airlift to Byron – and the view was apparently magnificent.
“It was beautiful. We saw whales and dolphins. It was magical,” Hildebrand said.
