The BBC reports Kenya’s president has announced that anti-retroviral drugs will now be free to all people with AIDS within all of its clinics and hospitals.
Kenya is one of the few countries to reduce their citizens’ HIV rate, "from 14 percent in 1997 to 4 percent today." The cost for treatment — 100 shilling per dose ($1) — keeps 140,000 of the 200,000 eligible Kenyans from taking the beneficial drugs. (more )
A good start, but more needs to be done!
It is absolutely fantastic to hear that Kenya is going to provide AIDS drugs for free through its hospitals and clinics! This is a brilliant start towards combatting AIDS and the destruction it causes, however, it is vital that the world wide community assists Kenya in caring for the children left parentless by AIDS and ensuring the entire population is supported in becoming sustainable in all manners of life.
