The first North American hybrid, or dual-powered, passenger locomotives have been contracted for purchase by the New Jersey and Montreal transit agencies. The new dual-powered locomotives, made by Bombardier Transportation, are capable of operating under both diesel power and alternating current electric power from overhead sources. We in North America really messed up by dismantling a lot of our rail system. We could really benefit from it now, as they have in other countries, as we are starting to look at energy consumption from both a financial and environmental perspective.
