General healthcare practitioners in England are now being encouraged to prescribe social activities as a means of curbing loneliness amongst older citizens.

Prime Minister Theresa May says that the government will be providing the National Healthcare System an additional £1.8 million ($2.3 million) in funding to facilitate new dance and cooking lessons, community cafés, and other group projects for seniors by 2023.

Additionally, the government is partnering with postal workers from the Royal Mail service to check in on seniors during their daily rounds.

“This strategy is only the beginning of delivering a long and far reaching social change in our country – but it is a vital first step in a national mission to end loneliness in our lifetimes,” said May, according to the BBC.
