The U.S. Coast Guard came to the rescue of more than 200 sea turtles Thursday, and rushed the reptiles to warmer waters.
Park rangers with the National Park Service called in the Coast Guard when they discovered hundreds of the animals — Loggerheads, Green, and Kemps Ridley turtles — suffering from cold water shock on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

The Coast Guard ship Cushing raced to the scene and took aboard the healthiest turtles, 217 in all, to release into warmer waters. The rangers looked after those that would need more care until other rescuers could arrive.

“Not every day you get a chance to rescue sea turtles in extreme, hypothermic conditions,” Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacob Reisener told WVEC News.

“Good luck to our flippered friends!” the Coast Guard posted to its Mid-Atlantic Facebook page after releasing the turtles later in the day.
