Jim Hensen Studios in La Brea.

Jim Henson didn’t do all the roles of the Muppets himself, but worked instead with famous puppeteer Frank Oz, with whom he developed a close relationship that helped inform many of the character duos like Kermit and Fozzie, and Bert and Ernie for Sesame Street.

Located in Los Angeles in what were the Charlie Chaplain studios, The Jim Henson Company is now run independently by Jane and Jim’s three children, Lisa, Cheryl, Brian, John, and Heather.

73 years ago today, Snowdonia National Park was created by British Parliament as the third national park in the country after the Lake and the Peak districts. It protects a mountainous region in northern Wales of the same name of 827 square miles of myth-shrouded mountains and valleys. Much of the park is undeveloped, but there are also many agricultural activities that go on.

The English name for the area derives from Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560 feet (1,090 meters). In Welsh, the area is named Eryri. A commonly held belief is that the name is derived from eryr (“eagle”), and thus means “the abode/land of eagles.”

Snowdonia is one of the wettest parts of the UK, and a part of Snowdonia is the wettest part. Nevertheless it remains well-visited by domestic tourists—3.5 million of whom come to partake in the serious hiking and mountain climbing on offer in the park.

For conservation purposes, the whole of the park is not totally protected as Americans would understand that phrase, but it does enjoy a particularly high number of special conservation designations—over a dozen nationally and internationally. (1951)

And, 55 years ago, DDT was banned in the U.S. for residential use by President Nixon as part of a total nationwide phase-out. After its widespread use as a pesticide without prior investigation of its health effects, it became infamous (stemming from the Rachel Carson book Silent Spring) for its environmental impacts, particularly on birds. The ban led to the resurgence of near-extinct species such as the beloved bald eagle and peregrine falcon. (1969)

99 years ago today, Robert F. Kennedy was born. The U.S. Senator from New York became Attorney General during his brother John Kennedy’s years in the White House—and would eventually launch his own race for president after JFK’s assassination.

Many of the civil rights initiatives championed by the Kennedy Administration and its successor were spearheaded by RFK, who was also known as “Bobby”.

On the night that Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed, Robert F Kennedy delivered the news to the people of Indianapolis, Indiana. Local police warned him that a riot could break out there in the heart of an African-American ghetto. He wrote his notes on the ride over and started his speech without any drafts, delivering it on the back of a Flatbed truck. Although all major US cities experienced riots, Indianapolis remained calm, thanks to RFK’s speech.

63 days after that night, RFK was assassinated at age 42 while campaigning for the Presidency. Since his death in 1968, his wife Ethel raised their 11 children and never remarried. She still oversees the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights. (1925)

  1. I heard the funniest bit the other day… A comedian was doing a muppets show & totally bombed. Hard act to follow.
I still love the muppets. Some of their music videos never fail to bring a tear to my eye or a belly laugh to my spirit. God bless em!
